Living Water
Living Water
"Living Water" is a 48” x 36” acrylic painting with oil pencils for details on BC wood.
I originally created this piece live on stage with Melody Memory
during a DaVerse Lounge event. I didn't have clear direction during the creation and was in the mood to create a image with a Native American, possibly Eastern Indian/Persian female as the focus as the focus of the piece. The evening of wonderful
poetry and great music gave me the movement and position of the body that night, but the event ended with the piece not being finished because the concept was incomplete. I liked what was produced that night (her head and left arm raised across her body, nothing more) but I could not figure out at that time why her arm was raised and and why she was leaning to the right. Movement and reason for that movement was important to me to complete the story being told.
I let the piece sit for some time as I moved on to other paintings. As I was approaching my firsts solo exhibit, I revisited the piece. After staring at it for about 30 minutes or so I laid down a few strokes and the vase began to appear, and I realized that this was the Samaritan Woman that is spoken of in John 4:1-26. At that point I began to envision the water from her jar coming alive and flowing around her as the text refers to her conversation with Jesus about living water. I finally had direction and it is one of the pieces I am most proud of even though it took a much longer process than most of my paintings.
I'm always looking for ways to communicate that scripture is more than words on paper. These are not just good stories and guiding principles,... this is real, this is our history, this was flesh and blood like you and I.
